Course Description: This introductory course surveys basic communication theory. Instruction also prepares student to acquire and develop practical public speaking skills necessary for effective communication.
Course Objectives:
 Enhance speaking skills of an interpersonal and public nature.
 Familiarize students with basic communication theory.
 Encourage learning by participation, discussion, and reflection.
 Train students to conduct research, write a formal outline, & to present ideas clearly.
Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, video presentations, class assignments, hands-on activities,
Course Assignments & Attendance:
 Students are expected to read the textbook chapters as assigned.
 Class participation is required. Failure to participate will count as an absence for the day.
 Homework will not be accepted after the due date.
 Speeches and exams can be made up only on the make up day and only with a written excuse and will automatically drop one letter grade. (More points may be taken)
 It is the student's responsibility to sign the role each class period.
 More than 3 absences will result in lowering the students overall grade 3% points each day. You do not need to tell me about your absences unless you expect to have many absences due to a specific problem.
 If you miss class, it is your responsibility to get class notes and find out about assignment information. You are still expected to do speeches on schedule and turn in hamework on time even if you were not there the day the work was assigned. Call a classmate, call me, check the webpage. There are many ways to get the needed information.
Drop date: Last date to drop with a "W" on transcript is April 13
Classroom Protocol: This class is structured to facilitate the interchange of thoughts and ideas; however, any form of disrespect toward others in the classroom will not be tolerated. Any distractions, "whispering, note passing" during presentations will result in a lowering of the offenders grade 10%. Disruptive students will be asked to leave.
Disability Services: Students may receive appropriate accommodations for their disability if they submit the required documentation and notify the instructor. For information or to register, contact the Office of Disability Services 619-4109.
Grading: A=100-90%, B=89-80%, C=79-70%, D=69-60% F- 59% and below; Students should use the grade worksheet to keep track or their progress in the class. Keep all speech evaluation sheets, exams, and homework until after you receive your final grade; Students who have perfect attendance will have the privilege of having grades rounded up. These students may receive up to one percentage point.
Inclement Weather Policy- In the event of bad weather, check with the community college to see if we will be holding classes. The number is 619-4377. NWACC also announces on ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX ,Magic 107, Power 105 ,Kix 104, and Mix 101. You may check the bulletin board on my home page to see how missing class will affect assignments. Midterm and Final Exams
 Each exam will combine multiple choice, true and false, and short answer/short essay questions
 Each exam will be no more than 50 questions
 Bring a skinny green Scantron, pencil, & paper to the exam
 A review sheet will be given prior to the exam

Outline: 2 copies, full sentence: Include, introduction, preview, transitions, review, closure
Works Cited: Must be typed in proper MLA format; Alphabetize references
Visual Aid: Large enough to read, legible, enhances and does not distract from speech (No living creatures, illegal substances, weapons, alcohol)
Speech: No more than 5 standard note cards; Write on only 1 side of note card ;Dress appropriately; Speeches should fit audience; Required to have introduction, preview, transitions, review, closure; Delivery: Practice speech with special attention to eye contact, gestures, paralanguage ( Volume& pace), eliminating “um’s” and organizing thoughts in a logical, functional manner.
